You have been following your training and progressing well. It is a common concern that when you take your vacation or are unable to train because you are travelling for work, you will lose fitness.
Don't worry though, missing a week you won't lose any fitness, and if you miss two weeks, you'll lose a tiny bit, but you'll regain it in two weeks.
When you are away, it also depends on the facilities and the time you have available. It's probably not worth trying to do a bad version of your programmed training, for example, riding on an old gym bike or swimming in a tiny pool. It might help you maintain your fitness, but it won't grow it.
So please read the following tips and arrange your calendar accordingly.
- The first step will be to look at your training calendar and switch weeks around so that your trip aligns with a recovery week. This way, scheduled training will be lighter and potentially more achievable.
- Check the facilities available, and review which sessions you will be able, (and have time) to complete.
- Only key sessions that you are unable to complete during your time away, should be rescheduled* to before or after travelling.
- Move sessions (from before or after your travel dates) that will be achievable, into your time away. For instance, you may be able to complete more run sessions while away, but no swim sessions, shifting sessions can help you complete more of your planned workouts.
*If travelling means missing some sessions, that is OK. Just leave them and move on. It is better than trying to squeeze your schedule. You can risk fatigue and injury by doing too much.
The best approach is to do what you can, but don't stress about it.
If you are on holiday, make the most of the opportunity to rest and recover. Take time to enjoy your holiday and your family.
And if you are travelling for work, remember to just do what works for you and your job. Doing a little training can help, but don't overload yourself. Stress and fatigue won't help your fitness or your work!
You can get back into training properly on your return.
