Can’t Train in Open Water?
Don’t worry—while open water swims are very helpful before a race, it’s not a deal-breaker if you can’t do them.
Why Open Water Swims Are Included
Open water sessions help you:
Build confidence in an open water environment
Get comfortable swimming in a wetsuit or race suit
Practise sighting and navigation
-
Rehearse race skills like:
Swim starts
Swim exits
Removing your wetsuit quickly
No Open Water Nearby?
If you don’t have access to a lake, river, or sea:
Complete the open water sessions in the pool
Wear your race-day gear (wetsuit if possible, race goggles, cap)
-
Focus on:
Continuous swimming
Sighting practice
Strong, steady pacing
Any Experience Helps
Even a short open water swim—such as a familiarisation swim at the race venue the day before—can boost confidence.
That said, if you’ve followed most of your training plan, you’ll still be well prepared even without open water practice.
