If you’re struggling with kicking, you’re not alone. Many triathletes find it challenging, which is why we don’t overemphasise it in the plans. That said, the fastest triathlete swimmers usually have an effective kick—so it’s worth practising.
Common Kick Issues & Fixes
Knees bending too much
Excessive knee bend creates drag and can make you sink
The kick should come from the hips, not the knees
Keep your knees soft and relaxed—not bent, not locked
Foot position
Point your toes toward the wall behind you to stay streamlined
Toes pointing down toward the pool floor act like brakes
Helpful Tools
Fins: Medium-length fins can help you feel the correct movement and body position
Still focus on kicking from the hips and keeping toes pointed
