Causes
Many factors will affect when you should change your running shoe. The construction of the shoe, your physical makeup, how you strike the ground, the surfaces you’re running on, and the climate you live in. Most running shoes will last between 300 and 500 miles.
Indicators
- The sole shows sign of wearing flat and losing grip.
- The midsole feels too soft and collapses easily under pressure.
- The heel support becomes mobile, worn and less supportive.
- Your toes wear through the toe-box, and the upper shoe tears.
- One shoe sole becomes asymmetrically worn compared with the other.
Effects
If you continue to run on a shoe that is worn, this can alter impact stresses and cause injury to muscles.
Each time your foot hits the ground, it generates a force up to three times your body weight per square inch. Worn shoes are less able to absorb that impact efficiently. Unevenly worn shoes cause more stress and force to reverberate through specific muscles, bones and tendons. These impact stresses go through your foot to your ankle, your knee and your hips. This can cause trauma and create a variety of injuries.
In the Case of Injury
Look for a physiotherapist that specialises in running. He/she will be able to analyse your shoes and advise you accordingly.
