Default Settings
Once you have determined your threshold values for your preferred measures (pace, power, heart rate), you can enter them in your TrainingPeaks account settings to get the most accurate workout data. It is a good idea to use a couple of measures for each discipline where possible.
Planned Training Stress Score
TrainingPeaks assign a planned Training Stress Score (TSS) to each workout which is an estimate of the training load created by each workout based on intensity and duration.
Completed Training Stress Score
Once you have completed your workout, TrainingPeaks then looks for the synced data prioritising the following defaults for each discipline.
Swim
- Swim Speed/Pace (sTSS)
- If no swim pace data is found then TrainingPeaks will calculate TSS using Heart Rate (hrTSS)
Bike
- Power (TSS)
- If no power data is found, TrainingPeaks will calculate TSS using Heart Rate (hrTSS)
Run
- Power (TSS)
- If no power data is found, TrainingPeaks will calculate TSS using pace (rTSS)
- If no power or pace data is found then Heart Rate is used (hrTSS)
TrainingPeaks takes your entered threshold setting alongside the measure found to calculate your completed Training Stress Scores.
For your completed TSS data to be accurate it is important you check:
- Your thresholds are up to date (for your preferred measures)
- TrainingPeaks has assigned the TSS according to your preferred measure
If your completed TSS is way off what has been planned for you, then it may be that TrainingPeaks has defaulted to a measure you have not got an updated threshold for.
For instance, if your device records power on the run, but you use pace as a measure, then you will need to toggle the TSS options in your completed workout file and select rTSS. You will then have the option to make rTSS the default setting.
For this example, to see your run training stress score for power, you can look at the average power during a recent fitness test (or repeat). Add this to your threshold settings using the MyProCoach auto-calculation to personalize your run power training zones. Your run workouts are structured using pace, and therefore if looking at run power, the planned and completed TSS will not be exactly as Phil intended, however, it will be closer and give you a rough guide.
